Our community stories
We celebrate the individuality of every person. We are all different, and that’s what makes us interesting!
Rockie knows that when she drops Kōwhai and Summer off at the Family Service, they are safe, have friends there and enjoy their time! Our Community Support Workers are passionate people that like being hands on with activities. The teams look for ways to explore the interests of young people and tamariki.
“The focus is on nurturing play and observing the natural friendships that develop, while fostering a kind environment.”
Aman Kaur, Community Support Worker.
All this is possible with the guidance, suggestions and ideas from the families that we serve. Our support is tailored to meet the individual requirements of the child/tamariki and family/whānau.

“It’s another family - we call it the village and they look forward to it, come Sunday. On our drive here, the kids get really excited. For them to feel part of something, that’s pretty cool because that connection with others – and outside my family - is hard to find.”

Chicago
Young People
Chicago’s an ambitious 25 year old guy who talks about a long list of things he wants to achieve in his life. He’s been working out what should come first with his Community Support Worker, Edge. Chicago with some assistance is cooking and is growing his independence. When building a relationship and working together, Edge asks, “what’s important to Chicago, now and for his future?”.
As Chicago grows his interests, some of his goals have changed too. Edge understands that a big part of his role is to work flexibly and advocate for Chicago’s rights and wellbeing. Chicago’s circle of support recognises his cultural identity and works collaboratively to support his aspirations and journey.
“I enjoy cooking, I think it’s a good skill to have. I’m learning how to cook so I can one day do it on my own.”

Jackson
Young People
Jackson is a young man who recently moved into a home with a few other guys. He’s a curious 17-year-old who lives with three flatmates who are also his age. Together, they’ve discovered a few common interests like learning the drums, working out at the home gym, and playing soccer in the backyard. The guys are able to hang out together in the open shared spaces where they usually have dinner together. There’s plenty of space at home to chill out alone, without the flatmates too. A large garage provides the guys with some room for activities when the weather is wet. Often, they’ll be out there playing table tennis together or chilling in the hammock dreaming up their next adventure!
Jackson and his flatmates showed their desire to stay fit and strong, and they help each other along with good encouragement. Over the last year, Jackson has been involved in a heap more activities, from dance classes, to becoming more independent at home. Jackson makes his own breakfast each morning and now makes healthy lunches for his flatmates too.
Jackson’s developing his self-determination in his life, and his confidence is growing along the way. With little steps, big things can happen!
How we can help
We know that people’s health and wellbeing can change throughout their life. Our individualised support teams include a network of positive behaviour specialists, registered nurses, youth response mentors and Service coordinators to ensure the best possible outcomes are reached.
Growing confidence, self-empowerment and determination looks different for each individual, that’s why tailored, person directed programmes have a strong impact in helping someone live the life they choose.
